Spinal Stimulation
Now offered at Reach for Speech
Spinal stimulation is a treatment tool to help increase a muscle’s response to a nerve. For children that have difficulty moving certain body parts or have difficulty with controlling motor movements, spinal stimulation can help train the nerves and muscles to interact better. During spinal stimulation electrodes are placed over the spinal cord and on the targeted muscle. The e-stim unit provides electrical impulses to these areas to help make a muscle contract. Spinal stimulation has been shown to increase circulation, increase sensation, increase strength, and can even help with urinary continence and constipation.
Children with Spina Bifida may particularly benefit from spinal stimulation. A spinal electrical stimulation program for Spina Bifida has been developed by physical therapist Gerti Motavalli and Dr. Gad Alon. Our physical therapists at Reach for Speech have been trained in the spinal electrical stimulation program and are now able to offer spinal stimulation as part of your child’s physical therapy plan. If you think your child may benefit from spinal stimulation or for more information feel free to call our office at 724-888-2548. More information on spinal stimulation can also be found at:
