Hilltop Horizons Update
We’re thrilled to share that our partnership with Hilltop Horizons has officially launched! Our first group of patients has already saddled up and is making remarkable progress in this incredible new experience. We are so excited to share a bit about the work that they have done so far in the program.
Before meeting the horses or stepping into the barn, our participants joined us for a prep session. During this time, they got accustomed to wearing helmets and belts, which are essential for safety while riding at Hilltop. They practiced important movements like swinging their legs over the horses and navigating the steps to the mounting platform, all while focusing on skills like core strength to maintain balance in the saddle. They worked hard during these prep sessions and we couldn’t wait for them to dive into the real experience!
The following week was filled with excitement as the participants were introduced to their equine companions. They toured the barn, learning about how the horses live and the care they receive. This hands-on experience included brushing and feeding the horses, helping the kids build a connection and gain confidence in interacting with these gentle giants.
With helmets secured, the kids made their way to the mounting platform to meet their horses, Wink and Poppy. Both horses are as sweet and hardworking as our patients, making them the perfect partners for this journey.
Once on horseback, the children received vital physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech treatment, all facilitated by the natural movement of the horses. They practiced communication skills by directing their horses with commands like “Poppy, go!” or “Wink, stop!”—an engaging way to enhance both verbal skills and physical coordination.
Throughout the riding experience, therapists incorporated various activities at different stations. One station featured a wooden animal puzzle that targeted fine motor skills and vocabulary, while another station offered a slime toy for a fun sensory experience. These activities illustrate how the horses complement the therapists’ work and enhance the overall therapeutic experience.
Riding a horse provides a unique sensory experience that can help patients feel more at ease and empowered. Many have discovered newfound confidence and made strides they might not have thought possible before.
We’re excited to see how our patients continue to progress in the coming weeks as they participate in this innovative hippotherapy program. We can’t wait to expand this wonderful opportunity to even more families in the future.
